One Hour/50 Gram Glucose Test

The one-hour/50 gram glucose test is a screening test for diabetes used routinely in prenatal care.  It is not necessary to be fasting prior to doing the test, but it is probably best that you not have eaten anything very sweet or sugary within a couple hours of the test.

You will be given a bottle of glucose beverage to drink which contains a measured amount (50 grams) of glucose (sugar), water, and flavoring.  You must drink the entire bottle and should try to finish it in less than five minutes.  It goes down easier if it is cold and you may add ice to the drink.  Note the time that you finished.  For the next hour you may drink only water; do not eat or drink anything else or use gum, breath mints, et cetera.

Your blood needs to be drawn exactly one hour after finishing the glucose drink.  You should be at the lab approximately 10 to 15 minutes early to allow extra time for checking in and the possibility of others being ahead of you.  Bring your written orders that we have given you to the lab.  You will have a sample of blood drawn.

The results of your test will be sent to us within two days, and we will notify you of those results.  If you have any questions or are confused by these instructions, do not hesitate to give us a call.
